Safety Check
Ride your bike enough and you’ll understand the importance of performing a periodical safety check. This will not only ensure your safety when riding high speeds or technical terrain, your bike will also thank you for it.
Keeping on top of the following settings and adjustments will bring you nothing but joy on your next ride, so let’s jump on it.
SAFETY CHECK
Basically to make sure you are safely riding your bike there are a few key points of attention.
Torque settings: due to the vibrations that occur when you’re out riding, many of the fasteners on your bike should be periodically checked to ensure proper torque settings are applied. The main areas you want to check are your cockpit (handlebar, controls and stem), wheel axles, nuts or skewers, seat post clamp, cranks and pedals. Different fasteners will have different recommended torque settings, so make sure to check the manufacturers specifications for the correct torque on each area of the bike.
Brake effectiveness: it’s pretty logical why we have featured the brakes performance on this list. Braking power is crucial for a safe ride, for this reason we’ve put together a few quick tips on how to set your rim brakes or disc brakes.
Tyre pressure: this can also be critical in terms of safety. Too low tyre pressure can cause pinch flats and loss of steering control, while too high tyre pressure may cause your tyre to pop off the bead, resulting in a big tube explosion - not good. Please refer to our tyre pressure guide for more info on this subject.
Another valid point to raise would be preparing yourself for the worst before your next ride. We always recommend taking a spare tube with you on every ride, as well as the tools and pump (or CO2 cartridges) to replace your tube and a small multi-tool. These can get you out of trouble on the side of the road or trail, in case the worst happens.
Although this guide is intended for our customers to have their heads around the safety requirements of their bike, we strongly recommend having it inspected by a professional mechanic periodically, to ensure your bike is safe to ride under your usual riding conditions.
And now you know what to look for in order to have peace of mind on your next ride. We hope this was a valuable resource to assist you in keeping it up with a safe and enjoyable riding experience. Happy riding!
